SENIOR SERVICES

Senior Center and Senior Transportation Program

Researchers have studied for years the health benefits of “social capital” – the ties that bind trust, connection, and participation – and how important social capital is for seniors. As we age, we retire from jobs, lose friends and spouses, and see family members move out of the area – all of which reduce daily social contacts, which affects mental and physical health.

Neighborhood House recognizes the importance that social capital has on our lives, and our Senior Center and Senior Transportation Program keep seniors connected to needed assistance and the community. We promote active and healthy lifestyles for seniors and assist them to live independently, offering services to enhance life socially, physically, and intellectually, with an emphasis on promoting choice and dignity.

We offer many services for seniors

Our Senior Center offers a wide range of educational, recreational, social, and health improvement activities for an annual membership fee of $20 ($30/couple).

We also provide the following services at the Senior Center:

  • Monthly foot-care clinic provided by a registered nurse.
  • Free half-hour visits with a Senior Law Project attorney.
  • Free help with Medicare choices and health care programs.

MEET A NEIGHBOR

MULOK

Sedighe “Mulok” Sherifi comes to the Senior Center four times a week on the Neighborhood House shuttle. She often takes the shopping shuttle to the grocery store to buy food as well. Mulok doesn’t drive, and in order to get out of her house and socialize with friends, she considers the Senior Center her lifeline. “I love everybody here,” she says. “It’s like my second home.” She is enrolled in the English as a Second Language class at the Center, where she hones her English skills. She moved from her native Iran about 30 years ago and now feels connected and supported at the Senior Center.

Senior Transportation

Our Senior Transportation Program gets seniors where they need to go — and where they want to go. Volunteer drivers provide door-to-door shuttle service for seniors and people with disabilities, assisting them with medical appointments and errands, while group trips to WinCo and Trader Joe’s keep everyone’s refrigerator fully stocked. Additionally, our weekly recreational shuttle service allows seniors to take advantage of everything Portland has to offer, taking them to tourist hot-spots, local restaurants, and nearby towns.

    Senior Outreach Program

In 2016, Neighborhood House launched its Senior Outreach Program, which works to connect with isolated seniors from immigrant communities, helping them to access socialization opportunities, health and wellness services, and other needed services. This initiative successfully transformed the community that we serve, increasing the number of seniors from diverse backgrounds from just a few to nearly one-third.
