Early childhood education and school readiness
Neighborhood House’s Head Start programs provide an opportunity for young children to learn, grow, and thrive. Our early childhood programs serve children and families in SW and NW Multnomah County. We help to prepare children for school by providing age-appropriate learning opportunities that ensure they enter kindergarten ready to learn.
We strive to support individual family growth and independence. We focus on parents as teachers, helping families to be successful in supporting their children’s overall development.
Markham Elementary program moved to Stephens Creek Crossing
Head Start classes have been moved to the Stephens Creek Crossing location while Markham Elementary undergoes repairs needed from the recent winter storm. Reach out to your Family Advocate contact with any questions.
for Head Start Education Programs
All Programs Include: Health, safety and nutrition education, on-site health and dental screenings, parenting education, parent advocacy and leadership opportunities, family engagement events, family goal setting, support accessing community resources, community building and more.
All center-based programs also include 2 parent-teacher conferences, 2 teacher home-visits, and 2 family advocate home-visits.
Early Head Start Home-Based Program: Home-based services start prenatal and with children ages 0 to 3 years and their parents. Services include weekly 90-minute parent/child educational home visits and twice-monthly play groups. Program runs mid-July through mid-June.
Early Head Start Center-Based Program: Center-based preschool for children ages 6 weeks to 3 years. Class: mid-August through mid-June, Monday-Friday, 8:15am-3:45pm.
Part-day Head Start Program: Center-based preschool for children ages 3 to kindergarten. Class: September through mid-June, Tuesday-Friday, 8:30am-1:30pm.
Full-day Head Start Program: Center-based preschool for children ages 3 to kindergarten. Class: mid-August through mid-June, Monday-Friday 8:30am-3:30pm

Why is early learning so important?
Decades of research show that the first five years of a child’s life are crucial for building the brain that shapes that child’s future. High-quality early learning experiences are predictors of health, happiness, growth, development, and school achievement.
In addition, children who experience a quality early learning environment (at home and at childcare or preschool) are more likely to show up in kindergarten ready to learn because they are better able to focus in the classroom, transition from one activity to the next, and interact with other children.
Early learning experiences make children more likely to successfully meet third-grade proficiency benchmarks, an important indicator of high school graduation.
